Can You Request to Have Citations Removed from Your Driving Record?

Traffic citationDrivers make mistakes. Perhaps you took your eyes off the road for a split second and were involved in an accident. Maybe you were going too fast while rushing home one day. When these types of incidents occur and you get a ticket for them, you are faced with a penalty from the citation. These penalties may include fines and fees and in some cases suspension of your license. Over time, many citations will eventually come off your record. However, in some cases, you may be able to petition the court to have them removed.

When it comes to your auto insurance, keep in mind the fewer number of citations or points you have on your license, the lower your auto insurance rates will be. It’s important that you don't overlook the value of making the request to remove those citations whenever possible.

How to Remove Points from Your License

Each state has specific rules related to how points are given and removed. Many states will allow individuals to petition the court for the removal of points before they fall off automatically over time. It is important to know the specifics for your state. Your local DMV can help you to learn this. Most commonly, there are very few reasons you can petition for points to be removed early. If you believe the points are in error or you want to contest them in court, this may help you to get them removed from your record.

Another way is by taking a state-approved driver improvement course. In some situations, the state will give drivers the ability to take this type of course, to avoid having points added or to have them removed from their license. You will need to complete the course, which is sometimes done online, and then submit the certification from the course to the DMV. It's also a good idea to let your auto insurance provider know you've taken the course.

Removing citations from your record helps protect your right to drive in your state. Too many points in a short amount of time may result in license suspension or termination. And, it can also lead to increased car insurance rates.
